Every year here in the Philippines, many Catholic devotees act or reenact rather the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ through self-flagellation, carrying the cross or crucifixion as part of their penitence, show of faith and belief that their sins will be forgiven.
What is flagellation? It is the flogging of the skin, most often on the back that can draw blood. It is a bodily penance to show remorse for sin of a certain individual. It also reminds many Catholic devotees that Jesus Christ was whipped before the Crucifixion.
When was this Filipino tradition started? It says that a "corporal mortification" was started in the 1950s. The Catholic churches all over the world received final approval from the Vatican in the said year. But I think, we now have a greater understanding that such practices are not healthy. I do an apology to all Catholic devotees in saying this, I didn't mean anything bad but this is just my opinion.
Anyway, I have some photos to share with you...
I took this picture in Kapitangan, Paombong, Bulacan...
Taken in Barrio Sagrada Familia, Hagonoy, Bulacan where my brother in law, Egay performed his sacrifices by self-flagellation...
Catholic devotees reenact the suffering of
Jesus Christ by self-flagellation and carrying the cross on the shoulder
where he would crucify later.
Filipino flagellants kneel in front of the church as they perform rites meant to make up for misdeed or to make reparation for their sins.
Punish themselves by whipping or flogging their back as a sign of repentance.
These flagellants believe that their wounds shall be healed soon through salt water...
I am not a member of the Roman Catholic church... I have just posted these photos to show and share the Filipino tradition/s during the Catholic Lenten Season.
